South Africa's best!”

Cleanliness of hotel. Very helpful staff
None

My wife and I have visited the NH Lord Charles in Somerset West on several occasions........we wouldn;t stay anywhere else in Cape Town! The hotel is set in delightful grounds; the staff extremely helpful and friendly and we always feel welcome when we stay! We would highly recommend this hotel to anyone travelling to South Africa

Lovely ”

My friend and I had a momcation here at the Lord Charles. The hotel is conveniently situated near town and a mall , yet the grounds are so nice that it doesn’t feel as though you are near town. The breakfast was okay, could have had slightly more options, but wasn’t terrible. The beds were comfy and the duvets are warm and cosy. The reception on the TV wasn’t great . We had an amazing time doing as little as possible while we stayed there

One night stay at Lord Charles”

Tranquil gardens, friendly staff

Lovely hotel with friendly staff and excellent value for money. The grounds are large with a lovely garden setting. Only gripe would be proximity to Cape Town. Of course, if you are specifically wanting to stay in the Somerset West area, location is great.

An Interesting Choice Outside of Cape Town”

The hotel is quite palatial with large and well-appointed rooms with verandahs out onto a park-like area.
The hotel was advertised as being "Cape Town" while in fact it is some 60 KMs or so from the city with no evident way of getting back and forth apart from an expensive cab ride or a car rental.

The hotel was advertised as being "Cape Town" while in fact it is some 60 KMs or so from the city with no evident way of getting back and forth apart from an expensive cab ride or a car rental. Good breakfast and great facilities (more of a resort than a hotel). The major problem for individual visitors is access... It is really set up for tours and should be advertized as such.

Nice location. Rooms a little 'tired'”

Excellent service throughout and a good breakfast

Overall a pleasant experience. The staff were helpful and service was good. The breakfast on the terrace was excellent. Only real complaint was that the furnishings in the room were a little 'tired' e.g. hook behind the bathroom door was falling off and general signs of wear and tear. Could have done with a mini overhaul. We had to leave at 5am for the airport on our last day and the hotel provided a food pack in lieu of our breakfast. This was very comprehensive and was delivered to our room prior to departure. We would stay there again. Easy drive to Cape Town and close to Stellanbosch.

Lovely hotel but needs updating”

Staff, setting and location

The hotel is beautifully set in well kept grounds and has a 2 nerby shopping malls, one within walkig distance. The main road to Cape Town is 2 min from the hotel and take approx 20mins. Also very close to Stellenbosch wine region and many superb restaurants The hotel itself is looking tired inside. The television is poor as is the choice of channels. The rooms definitely need a refresh as do all the public areas. The carpets in the corridors are getting threadbare. Also the only irons available are positioned in the corridors. A lot of this is made up for by the quality of staff many of whom have been there for several years. They are knowledgeable on the area.

NH Lord Charles”

Wonderful grounds/entrance. Superb service.
somewhat older hotel, but very nice.

Very nice hotel. Not the most modern and not the most central located. It is half an hour out of CapeTown but close to the airport and the Stellenbosh/Somerset West wine areas. Close to the beaches of Strand and the entire False Bay area. Very friendly staff. Huge gardens. Nice pools. Nice restaurant. Champagne breakfast buffet was included in room price! Bathroom would benefit from upgrade, but else the nostalgic rooms are beautiful.

Disapointing”

Location, location, location

We were really looking forward to our stay at the Lord Charles. The receptionist was unfriendly and unhelpful. Got the impression that booking in with an Agoda voucher means you got a cheap deal and don't deserve good service. Wifi is not great and limited and the Tv's are small and old. Remote control was falling apart.

close to airport, friendly staff, and comfortable beds
very outdated decor, probably was really cool in the 70s

The grounds are very pretty and the hotel amenities (pools, gym, etc.) are nice. Good breakfast buffet with large selection. Staff is friendly and helpful. The location was ideal for a night's stay before leaving from the Cape Town airport.

Highly Recommended”

The rooms are very comfortable and the grounds are exceptional. Two small but very nice outdoor swimming pools.
Public areas poorly heated. (Rooms fine).

Quite a large hotel but it doesn't seem so due to its layout. Hotel provides free shuttles to beach and nearby Somerset Mall. Concierge provides good and competitive rates for transport and trips. Main restaurant was very good. Food quality and service was excellent. Premium restaurant (La Vigna) was a little bit of a let down. It is located just off the lobby and is wide open to all. Cheap temporary gas fires are located around the room to maintain a less than reasonable temperature. Food is not exceptional, although not expensive either. Menu has several items that never actually existed during my stay. Puddings were a low point. Service is very good. Hotel is used by British Airways crews as a stopover point with possibly 50 or more BA staff in house at any time. The bar is very lively! Also takes a large contingent of SAGA travellers. I would certainly stay here again and would have no problems in recommending it.

lovely grounds, full buffet breakfast, quiet and peaceful, amazing staff, central location

Honestly, We enjoyed the hotel a lot and will most likely return for a stay. If the additional furniture in the rooms were more comfortable we may have stayed in the room a bit more but as it was we found that we were more comfortable staying out doing other things for longer periods of time. Only really using the room to sleep in. That being said the room size was quite generous.

Rather dated but fair value”

really clean and there is a safe, roomy, and traditional feeling when staying at this hotel

Rooms have had some updates, but more could be done. Breakfast was good, but service was lacking. Only one staff member was assigned to the grill, and she kept leaving her post to fill juices and other items in the main area. By the time one of us got a waffle, the other was done eating the eggs. Dining room was over-airconditioned. Coffee was ice cold by the time we got the hot food. Free internet only available in the lobby. Will stay here again, but would like to see more room improvements and better staffing.

Our short visit ...”

The fact that I could book for only 2 nights at a peak time of the year, the helpfulness of the receptionist/concierge (gentleman - sorry I've forgotten his name), the spaciousness of the hotel.

Loved most of the things we experienced whilst there. But (our) room would benefit from minor repairs (broken bed lamp, door didn't lock properly nor could we put on the safety chain, air con is old and doesn't cope very well etc). WiFi was very erratic - going on and off all the time. I thought the cleaning staff were exceptionally polite and friendly. My biggest grump was that we could only check in at 3.00 p.m. (and I understand about it being a public holiday but I still think it's unreasonable) .... yes, we arrived early and expected to wait a little bit but to only be able to unpack one's suitcase so late and retrieve items useful/needed for the day really wasn't great.
